Socially Engaged Art

Conscientização (Cone-sien-tee-sah-sowl) is an interactive event using popular culture and popular education to explore social change and liberation. Taking primary inspiration from Brazilian popular educator Paulo Freire and his term conscientização, or critical consciousness, the event will use puppet theatre and music videos to create a fun and accessible “classroom” for diverse audiences to engage with complex ideas about how change happens.

We will draw from student and colleague of Paulo Freire, feminist thinker bell hooks’s writings as the central jumping off point to learn about how radical teaching and learning can help dismantle oppression.

Conscientizaçao is a project by Betty Marin, Sharita Towne and Zachary Gough. Midland Library, Portland Oregon. December 19th, 2015.

Conscientização is funded in part by the Regional Arts & Culture Council
